Meeting
Hi everyone.
We have been asked whether we would like to be part of Durrell Day which is happening on the 14th and 15th of August .
This is a really good oppotunity for us as they are expecting about 5000 visitors per day! There is going to be a dedicated bat area up by the bat tunnel which is going to be one of 5 education zone and obviously we will share this area with Durrell’s one.
I thought it would be really great if as many of us as possible to get together to discuss our ideas and see how many of us will be available to do it. We are also getting a banner made by the lovely Naomi which we will be able to use at all our events, and we’d like as many people to see it / have input into its design as possible so everyone has a part in it!
I am thinking the 21st july provisionally, could you let me know if this is convenient to everyone?
Thanks
Kate

Bat Roost
“Whilst out walking very early on May the 23rd ( doing a dawn chorus ) we were lucky enough to discover a bat roost. In the roof space of the pumping station, at Val de la mare,( below the damn) they were entering through a small crack in the eave (facing seawards) it was wonderful to see them enter at speed, I hope this is of some interest to you.
best wishes
Tracy Vibert”
Night time creatures in crisis
Incase any one is interested here is a link to an article from the BBC concerning moth numbers falling which will effect bat numbers:

New Commitee
Thank you to all who attended last nights meeting.
We now have 3 new committee members.
I am continuing as Chair for another year, Pam De Gruchy has taken over as Treasurer, Kate Sharma has taken over as Secretary and David Tipping has joined as a committee officer.
As well as electing the new committee we have also arranged a training event for all bat group members and decided to take part in the Spring Watch festival and Wild Day Out. Full details of the minutes and events to follow.

Bat call analysis using free software
For those of you who may be interested in the analysis of bat calls and would like to have a go there is a free software package called Wavesurfer available. Wavesurfer is an open source tool for sound visualization and manipulation. Many people use this software to view bat recordings and it seems fantastically powerful and free. The software is available to download here: http://www.speech.kth.se/wavesurfer/
Configuration instructions for setting up the software available here: http://www.avonbatgroup.org.uk/resources/Wavesurfer+instructions-draft.pdf There is a bit of tuning to get it set up but once you are there you can save the configuration and apply it whenever you are looking at bats.
I have set this up on my home computer that is still running windows XP and although not completely familiar with the software I can get it to open and display files to a point where identification of the species is possible. Please message me on this forum if you are having problems setting it up or want some calls to have a go with. If you get it up and running I would love to know.

Long ear roost
Oh what happens if I write here then? Just wanted to say thanks David for the long ear roost tonight at the chapel. Best roost I have had the pleasure of visiting.
